8/28/2014 - 8/29/2014

Thursday
The trip was postponed to let the destination dry out a bit after rains yesterday. It's a go for tomorrow.

Friday
The day started a 8 am as we began our 342 mile journey to visit three sites of the Salinas Pueblo Missions. Each site was a bit different so I will post each on by itself.
The first stop was Abo, 125 miles into our journey. Abo was a thriving community when the Spaniards visited the Salinas Valley in 1581. Franciscans began converting the population in 1622 and by the late 1620's the first church was built. Sometime between 1672 and 1678 the site was abandoned. Here's what remains.

Tomorrow we'll look at the Quarai site.

  2. I am surprised it is still standing after all these years. Wonder what prompted their exit?

    1. Famine and disease brought by the Spanish caused a massive decline in population.

  3. Imagine the effort to lug all those rocks to that place before the first one was put in place. And to think many of them are still in place after all those years. Some builders, they were, eh?

    1. That site was occupied by an estimated 800 people. I can't imagine how much work each of them had to do to accomplish this.
