8/12/2014 - 8/17/2014

Tuesday
The monsoons have begun and its rained off and on all day. Nothing big, but just enough to put a damper on any activity that takes you more than a few steps from shelter. It looks like this will be the pattern for a few days.

Wednesday
The monsoon continues. .83 inches of rain and it has been almost continuous for the entire day. I had to feel sorry for a backpacker who arrived here tonight. He is on foot with only a tent. Those are days I would not want to go back to although I vaguely remember traveling the same way I can't say rain days were ever treasured.

Cardinals finally won and are only two games back of the division leaders. Hard to believe things are that close as poorly as they have played.

Thursday
Start the day with an overnight low of 59 and it has rained most of the night. Fog between here and the mountains to the east.

Looking toward the east

There is still some hope for sunshine for the day.

The Cardinals did win, so life is good.

Friday
The monsoon appears to be over, at least or awhile. The overnight low was 52, but it quickly warmed up and we are enjoying a real nice day. Made a morning walk to the Maverick Quick Stop this morning. This is the only quick stop I've ever been to that had a kitchen on site. They prepare several breakfast items before moving on to pizza and burgers at lunch time. This mornings fare was biscuits and gravy and that's a tasty way to start the day.

Cardinals win...3 in a row.

Saturday
Today began with inflicting myself with pain. Not intentionally, but as I leaned over to raise the shade I felt a pop in my right calf. Yep, a muscle has been pulled or torn and it now pains me to walk. Who would have guessed that warming up would be required before pulling up the shades. But then again, who would have guessed I had muscles to pull.

Sunday
The pain has subsided a bit in my pulled leg muscle, but not 100% yet. An afternoon ballgame kept me in my chair for most of the day, but it was fine as the Cardinals hung on to win.
After the game Ken came over and picked me up in the golf cart to take me to their patio to visit with Ron and Pat who drove over from Denver. Ron and Pat also have a place at Val's in Mission and will be my neighbors next winter. We really had a nice chat and I will look forward to seeing them in the fall.

  1. I sympathize with you and your pulled muscle. I have a pain in my neck today, and Donna says it's not her. Maybe you will have to leave the shades up for a few days now. Or, you could ask the maid to pull them down. I could say "I feel your pain, John" , but you know better than that. A pulled calf muscle is lots different from a stiff neck.

    1. Thanks Russ, I guess your right and I should wait for the maid. Only problem is she hasn't showed up for seven years. I'll limp and refer to it as my 'old football injury'.

  2. I guess it is our age and lack of exercise, at least in my case. I have been carrying bags of mulch in the trunk of my car for weeks but if it is not my back it is my new bum leg that keeps me from getting them down :(

Had no idea you had back packed when you were younger. I always wanted to but was afraid to do it alone and none of my friends would join me. Rain and back packing are definitively not a good combination.

  3. I can't imagine tenting and backpacking in good weather let alone in the rain. Not my idea of fun. But neither is a pulled muscle. And just remember - at our age it does take loooonger for us to recover. But I like the idea o an old football injury story.

  4. Some Stripes stores have the little kitchen in them. I used to eat breakfast at the one in Rockport that is very close to the fishing pier.

  5. I know Paul and I think at our age we have to warm up before we get out of bed. I am just getting over a pulled calf muscle. I did see the doctor thinking that I had a blood clot. The best advice she gave me was to use lots of heat. It is a amazing how much better the calf felt just after one day. I did stay off of it as much as possible. Try the heat! Hope it works.

    1. It's feeling much better today and I was even able to limp around Wal-mart. Can a complete cure be far behind?

  7. A likely story you pulled a leg muscle opening a shade. Tell the truth, you pulled that muscle leaping for joy at the Cards winning four games in a row... ;c)

    1. That would be righteous pain, opening a shade is just plain dumb.

  8. Pulled muscles are no fun. I try not to hurt myself but sometimes it just happens. Didn't know monsoons hit in CO. too. We have been getting nailed pretty good these past few days. Hope to start loading up the camper tomorrow if the cool weather holds out.
