Tuesday
Beginning to catch up after being internet starved for three days. Tuesday began with a visit to Fort Garland. Fort Garland was in service from 1858 until it was decommissioned in 1883. Most notable was that between 1866 and 1867 the fort was commanded by 'Kit' Carson and from 1876 to 1879 the fort was staffed by the famed African American 'Buffalo Soldiers'.

Five of the original 22 buildings remain and another has been reconstructed.

Seven pictures of the Commandants quarters.

Enlisted men's barracks.

Just a glimpse of Fort Garland then I moved on to Antonito. Here is a look at Cano's Castle another from Roadside America.

Beer can art at its finest.

    1. One man's castle is an others junk. He thinks it's a castle.

  2. Did he drink all that beer himself? No wonder it looks like that. Interesting that Kit Carson was the commander of the fort. Not sure why, but I never think of him being the commander.

    1. From the looks of the design it's very possible he consumed a lot of the beer during the planning stages.
It was new to me too, that Kit Carson was a post commander and had his wife and family with him on the post.

  3. Wish I had as much room on some of the cutters I sailed as those enlisted men had in their barracks.

Looking at that castle, I can see the justification for HOAs... ;c)

    1. Tell me about it. 4 deep, sixteen to a compartment, just cozy.
      Just zoning would help.

  4. I love that fort. Of course, I love learning anything about history.

Pretty cool castle. Beer can art is a bit over rated.
