Ely Nevada

This morning it was fuel up and then grocery up and then hit the road. First heading south for 31 miles until we hit NV-168 where we took a 25 mile jog west where so we could hit US-93 and began our northward march. When we came to NV-318 (The Extraterrestrial Highway) I was 40 miles from Area 51 and on high alert. On arrival in Ely a check of the clock showed no evidence of any missing time, so I guess we passed the area without incident. We started the morning at an elevation of 1,600 feet and we are now at 7,600 feet. I was hoping things would be a bit cooler and they are. Instead of the 106 degrees that it is in Mesquite, it's currently 77 degrees here.

One strange site today was at the junction of NV-168 and US-93. If you check this location out with Google maps you will find the most beautiful Country Club golf course in the middle of nowhere. The closest population center is North Las Vegas and it's 50 miles away. I guess they are planning on population growth. Anyway the drive was beautiful up a long valley with mountains on either side. Here is some of what I saw.

Thirty miles north of Alamo I encountered another one of those signs Nevada is so infamous for. Alamo was the last gas station I saw, 30 miles later in the middles of nowhere is a sign stating next gas is 100 miles away. Why don't they put the sign in Alamo stating next gas is 130 miles away or do they only make next gas signs in 100 mile increments? At least this trip I'm wise to their trick and start the day with a full tank. It's so much easier to enjoy the good life when you don't run out of gas.

  1. We remember seeing both those signs also. Thank goodness we had filled up too. I wonder how many people have to be rescued because of the stupid signs.

  2. It would have been even worse if I trusted the gas gauge in the motor home I had. It never worked right so I was always topping it off. What a pain that was.

Happy for the cooler temps I bet.

  3. Lots of long, lonesome roads in NV. I agree, those temperatures sound much more inviting.

  4. I guess the abducting aliens found you too well protected inside of Mel to tangle with. Or they were looking for a more interesting specimen... :cD

  5. Whenever I'm traveling (especially in the middle of nowhere) I always fill up when I see a gas station. I've had a couple of close calls, but thankfully I've learned my lesson and never let my gas tank run low.
