Gallup New Mexico

I need to recap my journey to Gallup since leaving Valentine and the Keeper of the Wild park.

I was running along old US 66 and one thing that struck me between Valentine and Seligman were three sets of  Burma Shave signs still in place. I'm not sure if they were original are not because the last original sign was placed in 1963, but it was a trip back in time. Next on our way back in time was a stop at Seligman Arizona. Seligman has not left the 60's and has all the ambiance of a carnival midway. I guess it works for them, but I can't imagine anyone less than an old hippie living there. Here take a look.

And then it was onto Williams for a stop Monday night. Not much activity here because I will be back in August for a trip to the Grand Canyon with my sisters and their husbands.

Leaving Tuesday morning the first stop was in Winslow Arizona where I was again seen 'standing on the corner'.

I also wanted to catch the La Posada Hotel which is the last hotel built by the Santa Fe Railroad for Fred Harvey. It has been restored and is still in use.

The front of the hotel.

The old railroad depot.

A fountain between the courtyard and the depot.

The trainside of the hotel.

The rear gate and train viewing area.

A really big yard ornament.

And just across the street an old diner.

From Winslow it was just up the road to Sun Valley and the Root 66 RV park (their spelling, not mine) for the night.

Today we are in Gallup New Mexico at the USA RV Park where we will spend some time plotting our next move. I have also run Mel through the Blue Beacon Truck Wash to remove some of the Arizona topsoil. Now to sit back and enjoy the good life,

  1. We would really enjoy Seligman. Paul tells me all the time that I need to get out of the 60's. Love that era.

  2. What a place to get lost in...your mind that is. I've never been on route 66, it would be fun to do someday. Thanks for sharing!

  3. You are near my favorite State Park, Bluewater Lake. My first night in New Mexico was in the Walmart parking lot in Gallup. I saw a woman with a motorcycle and a tent camping near me on the asphalt. It was windy and she had her tent tied to one of the poles in the lot.

  4. We have yet to make it to Winslow. I keep threatening but it just gets missed. Now the winds are moving in so I'm not sure when we'll get out of here.

    1. I have decided to avoid the winds tomorrow and stay another day. They're talking more of the same tomorrow. Be safe.

  6. I remember staying at the Root 66 campground one night when I got blown off the road near there. Their spelling was about all that was memorable about that place. :P

    1. It's a trip. Next time you go to Kingman be sure and stop at Seligman and then take old 66 into Kingman. Makes for a nice trip.
