Rain day

The rain arrived last night and it hasn't stopped yet. So far .53 inches has fallen on our parade. At least the other stuff (hail and tornadoes) haven't materialized and that is a good thing.

Yesterdays trip to the dentist went well. You need to remember my first trips to the dentist as a youngster was in the days where next to the chair was this ominous looking tree that had a little tiny sink and a miniature cup where you could rinses and spit all the stuff the dentist dislodged from you mouth. Also as part of the tree was an octopus looking arm that bent in several direction and each bend had a belt attaching a pulley to the next arm. all of this led to a drill bit that was more suited for drilling for oil than being in someones mouth. Of course the fun began when the power was turned on and they commenced mining. The dentist I had mined until he could no longer see because of the smoke and then we would pause to let the fire subside. With this initial experience you might see why I've always been a bit apprehensive when visiting a dentist. Yesterdays visit was nothing like that. Once we got the tree killed and I was able to fill out the necessary paperwork I was led through a maze to the rooms where the action was was to commence. I sure the maze was designed to confuse people who tried to run. The first procedure was a picture taking session, a mug shot was taken that had jumped out of the camera by the time they were ready to download it. A second shot was taken and the camera rejected it too. It took three tries to solve that problem. Then four xrays were taken. Three of which made it through the developing equipment, the fourth headed off to never, never land. We went back and completed the fourth xray later. After two camera malfunctions they didn't give up and out came the little pen shaped mouth camera. I now have more pictures of the inside of my mouth than I had of my first wedding. Next in order was a visit by the oral hygienist who made a trip around my mouth poking my gum shouting numbers to her partner in crime that some how related to the amount of give in my gum. Finally the dentist arrived, a little late to the party, but he jumped right in. The first determination was that no amount of concrete could save the tooth that has been giving me trouble. Not even the Reverend Billy Graham  could save this tooth, so out it will come next Thursday. Next we discussed scaling and planing a procedure that will help ensure that at age 100 I will still have two functional teeth. Two being the working number, because 1 is not a workable number and only insures citizenship in Kentucky. Given my innate fear of these facilities I will have to say this is the best experience I've ever had in a dentist office. The staff was first rate and all had a real good sense of humor which put me at ease and Dr. Tim  took the time to explain things in a way even I could understand.

The rest of the day will be spent inside out of the rain and maybe I'll bake some pies so I can have a bake sale, when the skies clear, to pay for the dental work. Watching people eat my pies would be another way to enjoy the good life.

  2. HAHAHA...you took me way back to my early days of visiting the dentist. They really aren't so bad any more. I like when the get me all numbed up with a q-tip before they actually insert the needle that is suppose to numb me.

  3. My parents couldn't afford fillings for us so the slightest cavity was always extracted plus having soft teeth didn't help.

When I was on my own I had so many repairs done on what teeth I had that after a while there was only fillings to repair and finally lost the teeth anyhow.

Now the few that are left are starting to cause problems. Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

  4. That's going to be a lot of pies and cakes to pay for all that dental work. Maybe there'll be a little money left over to buy an album for all those tooth pictures...

  6. Good post John, you really took me back. The only thing you left out was the rubber dam with the metal clip that would go flying across the room when it slipped off a tooth. As always, thanks for the laughs (and memories).

    1. I also didn't mention the assistant that was always available to hold you firmly in the chair.
