Touring Amana

Yesterday's tour of Amana was much like stepping back in time. A good bit of the towns buildings date back to the 1860's and the towns beginnings. Lots of things to photograph and I'll share some of them with you in the next few days.

One of the principle industries of the Colonies was the Woolen Mill.

The mill has been in continual operation since 1857 and still produces goods today for sale in their stores.

This is the mill from the other direction. The third floor was rebuilt to historical specifications in 1998 after 100 mile per hour winds removed the original third floor.

To provide power to the mills a 6.5 mile mill race was built to bring water power from the Iowa river.

Water still flows today.

And it still produces power.

On returning Mel to his parking place in the Park we again found the satellite not working. This required another trip to the roof, taking off the dome and kick starting the dish. I have made arrangement to have this looked at by a technician next Tuesday in Hiawatha, Iowa. We were able to get things working and still have TV, until the next time we move.

Today no adventures are planned, but we are going to do more reading about the Colonies and mostly just enjoy the good life.

  1. Hi John, You are near my old stomping grounds Iowa City. Make sure you eat at a few of the Amana restaurants. Isn't the humidity a wonderful thing!!!

  2. Hi Debbie, already started my quest of the restaurants and the humidity is only 65% sort of low for the Midwest this time of year.
