More Old Guerrero

The buildings in Old Guerrero were all made from sandstone blocks that was hand cut from the river. There are tens of thousands of these blocks all over the city. The blocks then had a coating of stucco applied to give them a smooth surface. Most of the stucco has long since eroded away. The labor to build this city staggers the imagination. More pictures to follow.

The history of the church.

Aview of the chuch from the plaza.

The plaza. The man in the foreground is Joe. Joe was born in Old Guerrero and lived here until he was eight. His father then took a job in the steel mills in Gary, Indiana and the family moved there. The structure in the center of the plaza is the bandstand. Every Saturday a band played from the top while people danced around the lower part. Under the bandstand was an aea where refeshments were sold. Joe remembers bands coming from all over to play here.
