A little history of the area.
As we waited in the town square the Zapata High School Mariachi band prepared to entertain us. This is a really talented group of high school kids that have won many awards in statewide competitions.
Here the students warm up before their performance.
The opening ceremonies were conducted by Norma Villareal-Arellano, the Elementary School Principal. With the town dignitaries introduced and royalty represented by the Zapata County Queen and her court we were entertained by the Mariachi band to kick off our day.
The next event was the classic auto show. I was able to capture the entire show in one shot. This was a case of quality instead of quantity, but what they did have was outstanding.
The next stop was the Nuestra Senora Del Refugio Catholic Church. Completed in 1875 and restored, after an arson attempt in 1991, The church has many architectural features including a nicho in the wall behind the altar and an altar which is made of stone,
The interior of the church. you can see the cypress lintels above the windows and the tongue and grove ceiling which was a very unusual feature in construction from this time period.
One special feature was the beautiful Madonna with gold accent and real human hair. We can only surmise the value of this work of art is priceless.
Tomorrow I will continue the tour of San Ygnacio with many more pictures that I captured during the visit. The day was completed with a trip to the Steak House in Zapata where a massive plate of shrimp was disposed of in proper fashion.
Today we are having more winter. The sky is overcast and the temperature hasn't found it's way above 55 degrees yet. I guess this will be a good day for indoor projects while keeping warm and enjoying the good life.
