Mesquite Nevada

After 150 miles on the road and a drop of 3,000 feet in elevation we have arrived at Mesquite Nevada which is right on the Arizona state line. We are hunkered down at the Casablanca Resort-Casino-Golf-Spa. They also have a full hookup RV park for $20.00 per night. I have decided two nights suits me. I plan to eat some of their cheap food and watch some people throw their money away, but nothing more for me, Thank you very much. When I was trucking there was a period of time when I was through this area almost every week. I think I paid most of the electric bill on Fremont Street. No longer something I want to do.

Yesterday's visit to the Powell Museum produced these pictures from inside the museum.

A dinosaur paw.

A depiction of what fun you could have running the rapids in a small boat.

John Wesley himself sat in a chair on the boat and by pushing buttons he became animated and told of his journey.

Some artifacts from the area.

This guy also became animated and told the story of the various trails that crossed the area.

A bronze from the art gallery.

Also from the art gallery.

Boats used to run the Colorado.

A reproduction of the scout boat from Powell's expedition. The scout boat didn't even make it to the Colorado river. The rapids of the Green River did it in. Powell continue with the expeditions other three sturdier boats.

The was one other part of the museum devoted to dinosaurs and I will post those pictures tomorrow. Now I'm heading to the casino to watch other people as they enjoy the good life.

  1. I can't imagine going down thru the Grand Canyon in those boats. Let alone with just one arm like Wesley.

    1. He was quite a man. 3 members of his party got cold feet about half way through the canyon and left and climbed out, never to be heard from again.

    1. Not quite as nice as papa boats, but then again I wouldn't want to go down the rapids in a papa boat. They were bad enough in the surf.

  4. You need a couple of your sisters along for entertainment. They love to give their money to the slots. I have always enjoyed watching them play.

  5. I live about 2 miles from a casino here and in Tucson, I haven't been to either one in over 2 years.

  6. I hear you on the slots. I do like to try my luck, and if I get to play for a couple of hours and lose only $10.00 I consider it "cheap entertainment!"

    1. That's the best approach. They don't build those fancy casinos to lose money.

  7. Never heard of Mesquite, NV but since you mentioned Fremont street, figure it must be close to Las Vegas. Can always find cheap eats at a casino as long as you hold off the one-armed bandits. (although I guess most don't have "arms" anymore - a one button bandit doesn't quite have the same ring to it!)

    1. They took all the fun out of the slots when they amputated the arms. Mesquite is on I-14 80 miles north of Las Vegas right at the Arizona state line.
