Hunkered down

For the full time RVers holidays are a good time to hunker down and wait until the dust settles. Last night here at La Mesa RV park every site was taken and there were a couple of late arrivals that just parked in the roadway. Surprisingly this morning the place seems to be emptying, but management tells me they are booked solid for the next week. We'll let the hubbub die down before we get back on the road. It has also surprised me that there haven't been more families using the park. I would think this would be a prime destination for giving the kids a little taste of history, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I have also been informed that this location is in the prime viewing area for the Cortez fireworks display which is held in the city park about three blocks away. It surprises me that it is even happening with the red flag, extreme fire danger flags flying, but I suppose they've done this before.

I also have to mention my graduating class of 1962 which is holding their 51st reunion tonight. Even though this year I chose a different part of the country to explore, I'll be thinking of you folks tonight and I know you'll be enjoying the good life.

    1. And the hose coiled. The volunteer fire department (me) will be standing by.

  2. I used to love 4th of July celebrations at the park with fireworks at night.

Now, not so much. Living in the county all the folks from the city come out here to visit their friends and relatives and shoot off fireworks without regard for the dry conditions.

Will be outside ready with the fire hoses like I am on New Year's :(

    1. I agree, it's all fun and games until somebody blows their fingers off or starts a brush fire.

  3. So surprised they are having fireworks. We saw on TV where a ton of places have cancelled due to dryness.

    1. I was surprised too since there have been spot fires in the area and US 160 is still closed east of Durango.

  4. Wow, although I love watching fireworks, it is a bit unnerving when the weather conditions are what they are right now. Good idea to keep yourself on guard.

    1. Probably be wearing my fireproof underwear just in case.

  5. Yes, I like to hunker down over the holidays, too. I hope the fireworks stay safe. Nowadays they worry me, no matter where I am.

My 51st is this year, too. I've only gone to one reunion, but my ex-husband, who was my high school boyfriend, goes every year. Just not my thing, I guess. :)

    1. Our school closed three years after our class graduated. Now we have an all school reunion each year as we watch the alumni gradually fade away.

  6. Never been to a class reunion. Not likely to with an exwife and an exfiance from my graduating class.

  7. I agree staying put is the best way to enjoy the holiday. I will have to make a run to the store but I will do that around 7 am and get back home real fast.

  8. We live next door to a school with the ball fields abutting our property. A Porta-John (no relation to you!) is placed at the edge of the field every year close to our fence. Kids love to throw firecrackers into the Porta-John to hear the loud report. One year they lit the whole thing on fire and let me tell you, those plastic parts burn HOT - darn near caught our fence on fire. Smelled real good too - NOT! I'm not partial to fireworks!

    1. That gave new meaning to the rockets red glare... at least for you and Russ.
