After the nice day yesterday and the promise of another one today, I decided to do some road tripping. The first stop was at the Iwo Jima Museum located on the campus of the Marine Military Academy which is on the grounds of what used to be an old Army Air Base. When the base was retired it became the the site of the Valley International Airport and several buildings were bought up to create the Marine Military Academy, a private boys military high school. As part of the school they maintain a private museum featuring the original Iwo Jima statue which was used as the basis for the replicate that stands in Arlington Virginia. The artist even came to Harlingen to supervise the assembly.
The Memorial, always impressive.
A little firepower.
Mini-tank.
A mandatory LST picture, but any LST has to be shown.
(sorry about the reflection)
More artillery with a sign that request that guest not attempt to fire the gun.
The gate to the Marine Military Academy.
After the stop here I went onto Palo Alto Battlefield in Brownsville and I'll show pictures tomorrow.
Getting out is just another way to enjoy the good life.
We visited the Museum our first year down here. We had a wonderful gentleman take us around the Museum and give us so much information.
ReplyDeleteThey've got a lot of info stuffed into a little building and they told me more that's not being displayed because of space.
DeleteWe love military and airplane museums. That'll have to go on our list when we make it down there again.
ReplyDeleteThis is a good one, not to be missed.
DeleteCouldn't stand not going out for a drive in that sunshine, huh? I sure can't blame you. We took a drive yesterday just to get out a bit, and we didn't even have much sunshine, mostly clouds. We did see the sun peeking through. I told Donna that we didn't have to go very far to see the sun, as long as we went straight up! Glad you're enjoying the day.
ReplyDeleteHitch itch PT Cruiser version. Sun show up, everyone leaves.
DeleteHey, they don't call it a Cruiser for nothing, eh?
DeleteIt feels good to get out after lots of bad weather doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteYou know it, we need our space.
DeleteSo, what did you hit with that gun? I just know you had to shot it, warning sign not withstanding. Hopefully, it wasn't that Large Slow Target picture...
ReplyDeleteI was tempted, but you had to supply your own ammo and of course I would never open fire on a heavily armed dreadnought like an LST.
