Carrizozo, NM

Today we said our good byes and started east. The afternoon wind picked up and we decided to stop for the day at the Sands Motel and RV park. Full hookups for $10.00 not too bad. Carrizozo is located adjacent to the Valley of Fire State Park which is quite an interesting place.


This part of the long Tularosa Valley contains many square miles of buckled, twisted basalt lava. Part of an extensive flow up to 165 feet thick and over 45 miles long that originated from several nearby volcanoes, including one vent now know as little black peak, 9 miles northwest of town. Can you imagine what this area must have looked like when the lave was molten. Here's what the area looks like now from alongside the road that cuts right through the field.

The last activity was relatively recent between 1,500 an 5,000 years ago.

The rest of the day will be used to plan tomorrows passage to Lincoln County wile enjoying the good life.
