Fort Selden

El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro -- the Royal Road to the Interior Lands

Most of us when we hear the phrase El Camino Real think of California, however there are other royal roads and the royal road to the interior lands runs from Mexico City to Santa Fe New Mexico. One of the most difficult parts of this road was a dry section of over 100 miles known as the Jornada Del Muerto (click for more information.). Travelers had to face days with a lack of water and hostile Apache Indians along this part of the trail. To assist and protect the travelers the Army established Fort Selden in 1865. Here is the start of our tour.

 Arrival at the entrance.

 More information.

The 37 star flag that would have been flown over the fort in 1867.

 Enlisted dress uniform.

 Officer dress uniform.

Field artillery, designed to make a big bang.

Looking over the parade grounds to the remains of the enlisted barracks.
The balance of the fort pictures coming tomorrow.

Last night the Cardinals did their fans proud as they came from 10 games behind in the month of September to gain the wildcard berth in the baseball playoffs. Go Cards.

The rest of the day will be devoted to household chores and enjoying the good life.
