Fort Selden II

As we continued our walk around the post it was noted that several of the adobe buildings have completely disappeared from the landscape. At Fort Seldon they are attempting to preserve the buildings, but weather is still taking it's toll. signs mark areas of interest and help understand what used to be.

A significant resident of the post.

And the remains of their home.

And how they looked back then.

 The post hospital.

And how it looks today.

 The enlisted barracks.

And how it looks today. Note the braces holding up the walls.

Tucked in one corner of the barracks were the non-coms quarters.

This is the east side of the post with the buildings listed below.

How the prison looked in the day.

Pretty boring diet to be found in the commisary.

A tribute to the buffalo soldier. For those who don't know, the buffalo soldiers were black soldiers, given the title buffalo soldiers by the Indians because their hair was much like that of the buffalo.  Indians laughed at when they first encountered the buffalo soldiers having never seen a black man before, but in short order they became feared for their tenacity and bravery. From most reports the buffalo soldiers were some of the best fighters in the west.

And the inscription.
The rest of the tour tomorrow.

I think I will use the rest of the day to make preparations for the weekend. Such preparations are an important part of leading the good life.
