Yesterday was a full activity day. Sal and Shelly arrived about 10:00 am and we immediately set out to solve all the world problems. This was accomplished in about an hour of discussions and the next order of business was lunch at a local restaurant in Dolores.
After lunch it was off the the Anasazi Heritage Museum where we spent several hours delving into the past and learning the history of the Anasazi.
This is a look at the museum where we encountered the first view of the Dominguez Pueblo ruins.
From the parking lot we also got a good look at the 'Sleeping Ute' mountain in the distance. This is one lazy Indian. He was sleeping when I was out here in the '70s and apparently hasn't gotten up since.
After taking all this in we went inside and toured the museum and I'll show you those pictures tomorrow. On leaving the museum we took the trail to the second pueblo that has been excavated on the property. The trail was only 1/2 mile to the site, but what they forgot to tell us was that it was straight up and for someone who's body had not quite acclimated to the 7,000 foot altitude it required a fair amout of huffing and puffing. The reward was a beautiful view of the McPhee reservoir.
And a good look at the excavated ruins of the Escalante Pueblo, with it's many rooms and the Kiva, which is the circular pit like structure in the pictures below. Can you imagine the work involved in gathering and setting all of those stones?
After this little jaunt we returned to town and took a look around before wrapping up our day back at the RV park. All in all it was a wonderful day with friends along to help me enjoy the good life.
