A day of checking out the sites.

It is a beautiful day here today and this morning Mel and I decided to head uptown to check things out. We had a nice visit to the old Montana Prison and the adjacent car museum and then make a quick stop at the local Safeway before returning home. Those pictures are down the road as we continue to catch up on past adventures.

Last Sunday while in Kellogg we crossed the interstate to visit the memorial to the 91 miners who lost their lives in the Sunshine Mine disaster in 1972.
The centerpiece of the memorial is a statue of a miner at work and it was erected shortly after the disaster which happened just up the road.
The sculptor of this statue was Kenneth Lonn who used to live in the area. While viewing the memorial an interesting thing occurred. A car pulled up with a young couple on board. In a brief conversation it was learned that they were from Washington on their way to Montana for a vacation. The interesting part was that it was the young man's grandfather, Kenneth Lonn, who created the statue we were looking at.
.This is a view of the statue from a different angle. While there we had lots of company as the area was thick with ground squirrels, they certainly know where the tourist congregate to get their handouts.

The rest of the day will be spent sorting out the mail that arrived from South Dakota this morning and of course living the good life.
