Wells Nevada

After checking the Chamber of Commerce web site  (Click here to see their walking tour.) it was decided to extend the stay in Wells to explore the historic front street and the California Trail Interpretive Center. So after moving my body 10 blocks to the 'Historic District' Wow, what a disappointment. I really believe the Chamber needs to remove historic Front street from their featured attractions. Here's what I saw:
This is sign on the Interpretive Center. The doors were locked, there was no sign to announce hours of operation and it looked like it only opened when they felt like it.
The next stop was 'Historic Front Street' The missing picture should have been a clue.
Maybe the fence is another clue.
How about the tarp over the roof?

This is the only building on Front Street showing any sign of upkeep. It's a former bank building and now a private residence.
Here is the famous Front street the town is so proud of.
Another view.

I believe this is one Chamber of Commerce that has risen to a new level of hype. These people would probably make an attempt to sell you the Brooklyn Bridge if you stepped into their office,

The walk downtown did have a benefit to me though. For the first time in three years I had a glimpse of snow. It was on the top of the mountain surrounding town and was nice to look at from a distance.

The rest of today will be spent recovering from all the excitement of seeing Front street and reminding my self that when enjoying the good life 'all that glitters is not gold'.

  2. Ouch, that bites! Now if you want to see a beautiful Front Street come visit Coupeville on beautiful Whidbey Island, you won't be disappointed.

  3. The 6.0 earthquake reduced Front Street to the rubble you saw in 2010. Very sad. Most of those historical buildings were lost. There is still lots of classic Neon around town though from Wells days as a crossroads city. I never tire of photographing the Victory, Lone Star and other classic motel signs, and that wonderful neon on the El Rancho casino, the building you saw with a plastic tarp on part of the roof.
