Decision made

After much helpful input from several readers, many of whom are full timers like myself I have decided to order a Verizon air card and retire Mr. Hughes. The Hughes satellite system served me well for the last 3+ years, but lately changes in their operating procedures have made me look at alternatives.First, the promoting of satellite usage for rural customers has loaded the satellites with more traffic which in turn lowers the available bandwidth per customer and thus the speed. To offset this they continue to lower the FAP threshold, which is the amount of download data allowed in a 24 hour period. Once the threshold is exceeded you are punished with less than dial up speed for the next 24 hours. Downloading programs and updates for the new computer has caused this to happen three time in the last month. Very frustrating and a cause to search for an alternative. The Verizon card is my choice and the order has been placed. I went with the 5Gb plan for $50 per month to get started. I figure I can always upgrade if I end up needing more bandwidth. The equipment was free to new customers (that would be me) and it should be here by Wednesday or Thursday.

Today is a normal, laid back, Sunday here in the park. No activities planned, but the visiting should pick up now that our blast of winter has passed. We are heading for the mid-70's today and 80's tomorrow. This is the way to enjoy the good life.

  1. John, Adding the Wilson antenna on top of Comfort Castle was the single best thing I have done in a log while. I covered adding it in my blog.

  2. Hi John,

I just got MiFi 2200 from Verizon and retired my broadband card. So far I like MiFi. It is 3G and can run 5 computers at the same time. We were getting kicked out a lot with the broadband card. Good luck. Deb

  3. Did you order the new 4G card? If not, do so because you will get much faster speeds when in one of the 38 4G cities. The card is backwards compatible to 3G, and Verizon Wireless will be adding more 4G locations in 2011.
