Full day

Yesterday Loren and I had a full day of exploring at three different sites. Because we covered so much ground I am going to break the day into three separate blogs. We began the day heading north out of Elephant Butte looking for the 'Rock House'. Very little information was found out about this house and we are still searching the net to find it's history.

When we found the Rock House we were surprised to see it was a one room structure with an attached garage.

More than strange, but we believe the house must have been built after the 20's when the car started gaining widespread usage.

The house sits on a point of land with a box canyon to the west.

Another view of the canyon.

To the east and somewhere in those trees is the Rio Grande river.

The trees give evidence to the only water in the area.

The road we came in on.

Allstate insurance men were all over the place.

Here is another one watching me watch him.

This is the view from the cabin. Nice site selection.
(first attempt at video, be gentle)

After the 20 mile round trip to the cabin we decided it was time for some lunch so we stopped  at a little truck stop that had seen better days, but that had a reputation for a great hamburger.

Part of the restaurant was in a converted railroad car.

And the hamburger deserved its reputation.

Our next stop was Fort Craig which we'll talk about tomorrow. For the rest of the day here it looks like we will be dodging the wind which has already hit 26 miles per hour. We will still figure out a way to enjoy the good life though.

  1. We stopped at the same Rock House and also were surprised to see it was only one room. Strange for sure.

    1. We're still trying to find out more information. Loren knows an old timer in town that might be able to answer questions.

  2. After reporting about the rock house last year, I spent a lot of time on the internet looking for info with absolutely no luck. Good luck on your search. I look forward to the next reports.

  3. I think we're going to have to dig up a pioneer and squeeze the story out of him.

  4. Now that is the best idea I have heard in a long time.

  5. You drove Mel all the way in on that dirt road? I'm beginning to think we treat Therapy too gently. The video was fine - you didn't pan too fast and that's a good thing!!

    1. Donna, you need to be nice to Therapy, we took Loren's Jeep. Mel's still got a lot of loose stuff in the wheel well that probably would have fallen off on that road.

  6. Very interesting about the stone building. I hope you can dig up some info.

  7. I like your little photo blog adventures, it's always fun to see unique places, thanks for sharing.
The video worked great, nice addition to your reporting.
I have to say I didn't get your "Allstate" comment on the rocks, I guess maybe I'm dumb as a rock ;-)

    1. Kenny, that was a backdoor reference to the Geico Gecko.
