Standing on the corner

Yesterdays drive from Williams to Holbrook gave me two events to report. The first was a stop at the Meteor Crater. This is another of Arizona's holes in the ground. It was created 50,000 years ago by a meteor estimated to be 150 feet across and traveling at 26,000 miles per hour it blew out a hole 700 feet deep and 4,000 feet across. The floor of the crater is big enough to hold 20 football fields.
This is the largest piece of the meteor that was found. It apparently broke off before impact and was found some distance away. It's the third largest meteorite in the U.S.
An overview of the site.
An explanation.
Looking across the crater.
And down into the crater.
A closer view of the crater. The square fenced off area is where the astronauts trained for the moon landings.

After leaving the crater the next stop was Winslow Arizona and a look at old Route 66's path through town.
Well, I'm a standin' on a corner in Winslow, Arizona,
and such a fine sight to see
It's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford,
slowin' down to take a look at me
Lyrics from 'Take it Easy' by the Eagles
Another view of 'the fine sight to see'.
 Another of the corners.
And a look down old Route 66.
After a busy day yesterday we will continue on east today with the next stop probably Gallup, NM.  Just another way to enjoy the good life.
