Today's travel
We left the heat of Lake Havasu City with it's 110 degree heat and 400 miles later we are in Ely Nevada at an altitude of 6435 feet and the current temperature is 80 degrees with an overnight low expected to be 46. What a change. Today's travels added two states to Mel's resume as we traveled through California and into Nevada. We passed through Las Vegas and the only money I left was at the gas station. I wound my way through the hills of central Nevada and past Area 51. No aliens were encountered, but some of the drivers in Las Vegas acted like they were from another planet. This part of the country spaces their towns really well. A sign was observed that reminded drivers that the next gas was 100 miles away. The interesting thing that it was placed in the middle of nowhere and about 40 miles from the last gas station.
Ely was founded as a stage coach and pony express stop on the Overland Route. Copper was found later and since then it's been a boom or bust town depending on the copper market. Ely is also the home of the Nevada Northern Railway Museum which I will check out in the morning.
Here are a few scenes taken from Mel as we motored down the road. The smudges on the pictures are the result of suicidal bugs who insisted on being in the pictures.
