Fun in the sun

Today has begun and it's beautiful. I've been doing a little maintenance and meeting some of the neighbors. Here in Sierra County things are pretty laid back. The rush is the weekend when the people come to the lake to recreate, otherwise it's pretty sleepy around here. To give you some prospective, Sierra County covers 4,219 miles or about equal to the states of Delaware and Rhode Island combined. The Rio Grande river divides the county in half from east to west. The eastern side of the county contains the White Sands Missile Range and, as I found out yesterday, Spaceport America, see http://www.spaceportamerica.com/ This is where Virgin Airways is building a facility to launch commercial space travel in the next few years. Maybe I'll have to come back in a few years to take a ride. The rest of the county is mostly old silver mining towns that began to fade after the silver panic of 1893. The notable exception being Truth or Consequences which has hot springs and has always been a spa town. As a matter of fact before becoming TorC it was named Hot Springs. Hopefully I'll get into town in the next few days and see what it's all about.
