Fort Larned, Kansas

Today I moved to Larned, Kansas. The National Park Service maintains historic Fort Larned here. It was one of the most important forts on the Santa Fe Trail from 1821 to 1880 and offered protection and escorts to travelers along the trail. The Park Service has done an outstanding job of restoring this fort to the way it might have looked to a traveler stopping on the way west. The pictures today are of the outside of the fort. Tomorrow I'll post the interiors of some of the buildings.

The officers quarters from across the parade grounds.

The enlisted men's barracks/visitors center.

The blockhouse. A defensive position.

The quartermasters storehouse.
