Several people have asked what happened to the water that flooded the town. When the town was relocated in the 50's it was in anticipation of the highest pool the lake could reach when filled. Shortly after the dam gates were closed in the early 50's hurricanes in two successive years filled the lake to capacity and the church had 6 feet of water standing in it for a number of years. The water slowly receded to its normal pool and that situation has never happened again. The eastern part of the town, including the old school, is under water to this day.
